Secondly, I realize that a lot of 'predicting' we do about the future seems to be cynical, negative, and sort of depressing. Let's look at the other side. In the same post on your blog, tell me if you think the future will more more utopian ('good') or dystopian ('bad').

SOPA/PIPA: For or Against?

You will be split into two groups (girls vs boys, just because we haven't done that yet). Nahyeon and Nadia, your job will be to defend SOPA/PIPA as an important development and a necessary new legislation. The boys will attack using reason and logic and come up with arguments that these acts are unnecessary/intrusive.

 

Spend today's class familiarizing yourself with both sides of the argument.

You are all criminals! (Or are you?)

Alright folks, today we're starting an new interesting roleplay. You will take the position of the Defense in a criminal trial. Mr. Gavin's ITGS class will play the prosecution. Our first step is to read this article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14760650

Your job is to take on the role of the people who have been arrested in the article. You will need to defend yourself against Mr Gavin's kids as they try to make sure you are thrown in jail! To get your brain working in legal-mode, answer the following questions (post them on your blog):

1. What are the 8 Principles of the Data Protection Act?


2. Who is the Information Commissioner and what does he do?


3. What does the Data Controller do?


4. Who are the Data Subjects?


5. What are Exemptions (and who gets them)?


6. Are there different Data Laws in different countries? Do you think this is fair?

After answering the questions, please just think about the following statement:

"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"

To what extent is this a true statement?

We will have the trial on Wednesday, September 14th, so make sure you're prepared to defend yourself!
