Hey 7s!!
The next project is to make a game that LS kids would find both educational and entertaining. Make sure you've had a chance to answer the post below to get you thinking about games. Over the weekend, I'd like you to complete your Investigation phase. For this, you'll need:
- Design brief
- Specifications
- Some research on how games are made
- an interview of a friend or a LS student asking them what sort of things they look for in a game
- Work Cited
Please see the Unit Brief here.

What's your favorite game? Why?
(taken from: http://gamespics.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/super-mario-bros.jpg)
The next project we'll be working on in is 'Making a Game'. Check out the Brief here.
Before we get to the actual project, I'd like to hear from you about what makes a game enjoyable? We all like to play different kinds of games, like RPGs, FPS, Puzzle-games, RTS, Sports. What's your favorite kind of game? Post it on your blog (and give me some pictures, too).
Secondly, I want you to do some research about the good and the bad things about games and gaming. We know that there are some people who say games are completely evil and should never be used. There are also some people who say games can actually be a useful tool for education and even science (remember FoldIt?!). Find me two articles related to gaming: one that says gaming is good, one that says gaming is bad. Tell me which one you agree with and why (post the links on your blog).
Finally, before I see you on Thursday, make sure you have gone to this website and downloaded Scratch 1.4 for Mac. (It's about 35MB, so do it from home.) Feel free to play around with it if you have time. We'll be learning how to use it in class on Thursday.
For your INVESTIGATION STAGE, you'll need the following:
- Design brief
- Specifications
- Some research on how games are made
- an interview of a friend or a LS student asking them what sort of things they look for in a game
- Work Cited
Please embed it just the Investigation on your blog now.
Animate!!
We all loved (or STILL love) cartoons and other forms of animation. Check out the following movies for some great examples of what's possible with a bit of clay, a camera, and a LOT of patience.
You can choose to work alone or with one partner for this assignment.
The work will go as follows:
Week 1: Investigation
- Design brief
- Specifications
- Some research on how animations are made
- an interview of a friend or a LS student asking them what sort of things they look for in animation
- Work Cited
Week 2: Design and Plan
Week 3-4: Create
Week 5: Evaluate
You must come up with two separate storyboards and then justify your choice during the Design stage. Make sure to take plenty of pictures and screenshots during the Create stage to show your evidence of creation.
We'll try to show the completed products to some LS kids in the last week of school before Christmas.
For the interview process, try to find a LS student and ask them what sorts of things they'd like to see in an animated film.

Logos
How important are the logos of a company?
Of course we all recognize these logos. Take a look at this webpage to see some of the more famous logos of all time.
Your second project for IT is to design a new set of logos for 2 out of the following 3 separate topics:
- the Design Cycle (5 logos)
- the Areas of Interaction (5 logos)
- The IB Learner Profile (10 logos) You MUST do this one.
For example, you could design logos for the IB Learner Profile and the Areas of Interaction or the IB Learner Profile and the Design Cycle. Then, during the Design stage, you will justify which one you have decided to choose to Create.
Week 1: Investigation
Week 2: Design and Plan
Week 3 and 4: Create
Week 5: Evaluate
At the end, we will try to find the best logos and they will become the official Logos for SWA and will be posted all around the school!
ADDITION!
There's a new option added to the Logo Project: Intramural Logos!
Mr David needs logos for the following animals: Komodo Dragon, Orangutan, Shark, Tiger, Manta Ray
Original Resolution size: Approximately A4 (this will allow for a range of increased and decreased size)

Investigate, Design, Plan Keynotes Due
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR SOURCES LISTED AT THE END OF YOUR INVESTIGATION STAGE!!!!
Look at this document to learn how to do it properly: How_To_Cite_A_Site
(Sorry for the all capital letters, but this is VERY IMPORTANT!) If you do not have a Sources Cited slide at the end of your Investigate Stage, you cannot get anything higher than a 1.
After that, please submit your Investigate, Design, and Plan slides as soon as possible. If you need to, copy your slides into a new Keynote and email it to me at brian_duffy@swa-jkt.com. Or you can just email everything you have so far.
I will send out emails to the classes I don't see today.

Spend a little bit of time over the break completing the worksheet from Monday's class, and review what we have discussed regarding the first two topics.
Have a fantastic break!
Mr. B
Work over the break
I hope you have an excellent October Break; you have definitely earned it!
Please make sure you have SEVEN reflection posts done by the time you come back to school on October 24th. We'll then have one more week to complete the Creation stage (giving you a total of TEN reflection posts needed to be considered for full marks).

Click here for a great example from Elaine in 7.2.
Also, make sure you're putting your posts into a Word document (or directly in your Keynote), so you can hand them to me in one form.
Sensory Overload!
There are many types of sensors. They are used to measure and/or detect a huge variety of conditions including: temperature, pressure, level, humidity, speed, motion, distance, light or the presence/absence of an object and many other types. There are many versions of each type which may use a different sensing principle or may be designed to operate within different ranges.
What are the five senses?
How many technological devices can you think of that measure these senses? When might they be used? Why would we used them rather than our own bodies? What are some things that machines can measure that we can't?
What about a Sixth Sense?
Take a look at this link for a picture of what the future of mobile phone sensors might hold. Analyze it with the ITGS Triangle and post it on your blog.

Printers, printers, printers!
Today, you're going to do some research on the three types of printers: Dot Matrix, Inkjet, and Laser.
(Taken From http://obsoleteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/dot_matrix_obsoleteblog.jpg)

Please create a table in Excel listing the major characteristics, the pros and cons of each, and 3-5 examples of the best place each should be used. When you're done the table, take a screenshot and post it to your blog.
Example:
Acronyms from Monday:
OCR - Optical Character Recognition
MICR - Magnetic Ink Character Recognition
OMR - Optical Mark Recognition
EPOS - Electronic Point of Sale
EFTPOS - Electronic Funds Transfer Point of Sale
ATM - Automated Teller Machine

How is cooking a pizza the same as a computer?
Think of it in these terms:
data > input > processing > output
What is the 'data'? What do we use to 'input'? How is it 'processed' and what is the final 'output'?
Then try to relate it to this drawing:
How is creating a pizza similar to what you see in the diagram? What are all the types of Input Devices and Output devices you can think of? Post them on your blog. Ie:
Input Devices: mouse, keyboard,...
Output Devices: monitor, speakers,...
Go HERE for some ideas, but there are many many more.
Finally, your homework is to research the following acronyms and be prepared to explain what their meaning is for Wednesday:
OCR
MICR
OMR
EPOS
EFTPOS
ATM
Creation Stage
It's extremely important that you keep a log or journal of the entire process, as this is a major portion of your final mark.
Take a look at an excellent example of this here: LOG EXEMPLAR.
The main difference is that you will have a document of your Journal AND you will be posting it on your blog every class.
Be sure to take many screenshots or actual photos of your Creation Stage and write down any thoughts or questions you have as you are creating! Click HERE for instructions for taking screenshots.

Planning Stage
- I have included a time line with Gantt chart ( Gantt chart should show planning and scheduling tasks over time )
- I have included a step by step plan ( How the project will be carried out )
- I have included evidence for my planning about material/tools and resources usage.
- I have critically evaluated my time plan. I have tried to answer the following questions:
- Was the plan was detailed enough and why?
- Could it be followed by someone else ?
- Have I used all the resources available to me?
I have justified any modifications that seem necessary at this stage to my original design.

The Dangers of Social Networking
http://itgsonline.com/?p=979
Read both articles above. Notice how the second writer links information from the first article to the ITGS Triangle. Use this as a technique going forward.
You next task is to find your own article about Social Networking and create another link to the ITGS Triangle. You can use Twitter, Facebook, QZone, or any of the other websites we examined yesterday. Try to find an article about how Social Networking can have a negative effect on the lives of its users.
Remember, we've already talked about Facebook in a general way, now I need you to find a specific incident and link it to the Triangle.
Post it on your blog.
Wednesday, September 14, 2011
Social Networking
Click on the above link and read the article about Social Networks vs Community.
Afterward, write down as many forms of social networks as you can (many are listed in the article, but there are so many more you can think of). After that, do a compare and contrast between the different forms ("this one is mainly for ______, but this one is designed to ______, etc").
Finally, relate both Facebook and Twitter to the ITGS Triangle and post about it on your blog (remember, you need to relate it to all three strands, and as many topics within the strands as you can).
Wednesday, September 7, 2011
You are all criminals! (Or are you?)
Your job is to take on the role of the people who have been arrested in the article. You will need to defend yourself against Mr Gavin's kids as they try to make sure you are thrown in jail! To get your brain working in legal-mode, answer the following questions (post them on your blog):
- What are the 8 Principles of the Data Protection Act?
- Who is the Information Commissioner and what does he do?
- What does the Data Controller do?
- Who are the Data Subjects?
- What are Exemptions (and who gets them)?
- Are there different Data Laws in different countries? Do you think this is fair?
After answering the questions, please just think about the following statement:
"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"
To what extent is this a true statement?
We will have the trial on Wednesday, September 14th, so make sure you're prepared to defend yourself!
Monday, September 5, 2011
ITGS Triangle
Today we're going to take a closer look at the ITGS Triangle:

2.2. Education and Training Nadia
2.3. Science/Environment George
2.4. Health Nahyeon
2.5. Arts, Entertainment, Leisure Darian
2.6. Politics/Government Yohan
After you have found your article, use the ITGS Triangle Template 2012 - 2 sides template to practice.
Let's try to finally establish some sort of routine; I know it's been difficult with all the breaks in the first month, but now we have a chance to get into a groove.
Welcome Back!
We're going to continue on with the Design Stage of the Cycle today, so make sure you have all six of your designs done by Wednesday morning, and then we'll go over how to evaluate them. Remember to look at the Links on the sidebar and the example on your class page for ideas.
For the next few classes, you'll be working on your Designs. Remember that you need the following to be included in your six designs:
- 2 Websites
- 2 Newsletters/Print media
- 2 Video/Broadcast Storyboards (find the Storyboard template here)
Let's try to finally establish some sort of routine; I know it's been difficult with all the breaks in the first month, but now we have a chance to get into a groove.

Why Blog?
What do you think are the good/bad things about this system when compared to the tradition system (ie. teacher gives you a handout, you do it at home and bring it back)? Will this make organization easier or harder? Will you be able to communicate more or less effectively? Is this just another IT tool that we’re making you learn? Tell me your thoughts!
